BALLAST SCARIFIER

Ballast Preparation Tool

One of the key benefits of steel sleepers is the reduction in ballast required when relaying.

However, unless the ballast bed is properly prepared prior to laying the sleepers, extra tamping operations will be required as the ballast will not flow into the base of the sleeper during the tamping operation.

To ensure that the ballast bed is completely free of hard areas the Thomson Rail Equipment Ballast Scarifier has three separate functions.

First the ballast is lifted by tines with wing blades to break up any clumps and hard spots.

Next a hydraulically adjustable levelling blade evens out the ballast cribs.

Finally a crumbling roller evens out the consistency of the ballast ready for tamping once the sleepers are in place.

This attachment can be adapted to fit the three point linkage of a tractor or to the boom of a tracked excavator.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Three key elements give rapid and consistent results

  • Lifting eyes for easy transport with crane lorry

  • Can be mounted on tractor or excavator

  • One pass with the scarifier performs three operations:

    • breaking up

    • levelling

    • crumbling
